What are some of the benefits of goat's milk?
Goat's milk has 30% less cholesterol, 13% less lactose, and contains 13% more calcium than cow's milk.
Mornington's milk is free of antibiotics, growth hormones and preservatives. Our producers also use only vegetable based feed with no animal by-products.
The fat molecules in goat's milk are one-fifth of the size of those in cow's milk, which makes it more easily digested by people with lactose intolerance and other sensitivities to dairy.
Goat's milk is closer to human milk, and is therefore more easily accepted by the young and frail. Goat milk has an alkaline reaction, the same as human milk, whereas cow's milk has an acidic reaction.
Goat's milk does not form mucous (phlegm), and because of this, it is more easily tolerated by those with allergies or asthmatics.
Goat's milk contains a more highly-evolved cholesterol than cows milk. It is more available for absorption by the brain and body, which is essential to the health of the myelin sheaths "white matter" of the brain and nerves.
Goat's milk is more tolerated by people with liver problems or damaged livers because of the smaller fat molecules.
Goat's milk has the ability to "sweeten" the intestinal tract, which can help with constipation.
Goat's milk has a higher evolved carotene (Vitamin A). Research has found this to have cancer preventing properties.
Is your milk certified organic?
Our milk is not certified organic; however, it's probably as close to organic as it will get without the certification.
The process to become certified organic is very long, and expensive. It takes at least a year for the goat farmer's herd and 3 years for the fields to become certified organic. They would basically have to start over; it's a completely different way of farming.
This is a very costly process; the farmers must also pay an expensive auditor's fee. The returns would not justify the expense of this process right now.
Their land must be free of all chemicals for 3 years, and their goats can only eat certain feed that is certified organic for 1 year. Organic feed is twice the cost; it limits the opportunity for disease prevention because once an animal is treated with antibiotics, it can never be certified organic again. Also, you can never treat the young and can not vaccinate the herd. Our farmers vaccinate and treat their goats; however, they do not include their milk with the milk that gets shipped to Mornington, they allow for the goats to get better and free of antibiotics before returning to the milking line.
Our milk is free of growth hormones, preservatives, antibiotics, and no animal by-products are used.
Is it possible to buy raw goat's milk?
It is illegal to sell raw unpasteurized milk.
Can babies drink the goat's milk?
Babies under 3 months must have a folic acid supplement, as goat's milk is naturally low in this nutrient (sources of folic acid include green vegetables). Otherwise, goat's milk is fine for babies to drink.
What do goats eat?
Our goat's diets are forage based. They mostly eat hay & hay crops (eg. hay silage), and grains like corn, barley and oats. Some producers may also feed their goats minerals for a balanced diet.
How do you reduce the milk fat content from whole milk to 2%?
To reduce the milk fat content from whole milk to 2% we separate raw cream. This is done by a centrifugal force in-line separator before the milk is pasteurized and homogenized.
Is your packaging recyclable?
Yes, all of our packaging is recyclable. This includes our milk bags, milk pouches, milk bottles, etc.
